Bizhub Highveld Lions scoops team of the year award

Bizhub Highveld Lions were named the Sports Team of the Year at the Gauteng Sports Awards held at the Sandton Convention Centre on 29 September.

This comes after their outstanding cricket season where they won the Cricket South Africa T20 Challenge and the 4-Day Franchise Series.

Bizhub Highveld Lions marketing and communications manager Wanele Mngomezulu said, “This has been a long time coming especially from the Lions family. This is a true reflection of what we’ve set ourselves to achieve this past season. What we did off the field was very key as we partnered with a lot of causes and we tackled broader societal challenges.”

The 9th annual Gauteng sporting event once again lived up to its reputation of being one of the greatest and glitzy sporting events hosted in the province. It brought together stars from across Gauteng as guests of MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Mbali Hlophe.

“This was truly a spectacular evening of celebrating sporting excellence in the Gauteng province, the home of champions,” said Hlophe. “It is such a tremendous honour to have been able to recognise those who have performed so well, have shared our stories of success and have developed up and coming talent in the past year, and congratulations to all the winners. We continue to inspire the youth through the power of sport.”

Caster Semenya scooped the biggest prize of the night as she won Sport Personality of the Year. Sprinter Akani Simbine and swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker were also among the big winners on the night, as they scooped the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards respectively.
