Tulz Madala to be the next big thing

SANDTON CHRONICLE – Entertaining, tall and handsome would be the best way to describe Tulz Madala. Living in the picturesque suburb of Riverclub, he let us in on his one-way trip to success.

A broadcaster of note, the funny 26 year old is the Joburg guru of the 5 Squad at national radio station 5FM. A resident celebrity right under our noses, Tulz entertains listeners every Friday from 1am to 4am.

Besides his night job at 5FM, Tulz is also an entrepreneur, cook and voice-over artist. “At the moment I’m running an AirBNB here in Riverclub and I also sell chicken at a social market in Vosluroos.

I’m the cook in my group of friends and I love food so I know what tastes good,” said Tulz. He mentioned that he has an obsession with entertaining the masses. “Every time I broadcast, I hope to entertain but I also hope to make people realise and say to them ‘Black Child you are beautiful, feel good about yourself’, if I can make a young black child feel like anything is possible, then yeah, it’s done and dusted,” he said proudly.

His journey started in his hometown in the Eastern Cape. “Being a big guy, I was often pressured into playing rugby but I didn’t enjoy being tackled as much as I enjoyed entertaining people. I tried the whole rugby thing and it didn’t work out.” After playing a role in his high school play, West Side Story, he fell in love with drama.

“You know, in high school my life orientation teacher advised me to study at Africa Film Drama Art (AFDA). I applied and got accepted but being raised by a single mother, it was hard to pay the high fees so I kind of let that dream go and went on to study law,” he said. Two weeks into the law course, Tulz received a call which may have changed his life forever.

“AFDA called me and offered me a 50 per cent bursary and I couldn’t believe it. Naturally I called my mother and told her the news, she immediately said ‘God is trying to tell us something’, and I was on my way to Cape Town to study television and acting at AFDA.

I graduated within three years and while the road was long to get to where I am now, I can say that the rest is history,” he said excitedly. Tulz aspires to be one of the mostcelebrated, appreciated and listened to broadcasters in the near future.
