Furry friends enjoy first Spring Day dog walk

MORNINGSIDE – Furry friends and their owners gathered at Ernest Ullmann Park to raise funds for the Friends of Sandspruit and the SPCA at its first Spring Dog Walk.

The Friends of Sandpruit and the Sandton SPCA hosted its first Spring Dog Walk at the Ernest Ullmann Park in Morningside on 1 September.

The event was aimed at raising donations for the Sandton SPCA and funds for the park. Upon a reached agreement with Johannesburg City Parks, Friends of Sandspruit solely manages Ernest Park in an effort to help preserve and protect the river environment, according to the association’s chairperson Alex Parkins said.

Parkins added that this was the first time that they have partnered with the Sandton SPCA, “We hope that this will become an annual event, who knows, maybe even quarterly.”

Together with the entry fee, dog walkers were urged to donate bags of dog food before beginning the race. The dog food will go to the dogs at the SPCA.

The 2.5km trail walk led through the outskirts of the park and the river. It was described as a ‘truly stunning morning out’ by the association’s patriot Kate Turkington.

“It is an honour to be part of this event. Congratulations to the wonderful Friends of Sandspruit who keep Ernest Ullman Park in pristine condition,” Turkington added.
