Hearts of Hope receives a heartfelt donation

WENDYWOOD – The donation will be used to build an additional classroom for the young children at Hearts of Hope.

The Hearts of Hope non-profit organisation in Wendywood received a donation of over R480 000 thanks to the fundraising efforts of Super Group.

Hearts of Hope currently provides a safe haven for over 30 children who have been abandoned. About three months ago, Kerin Sinton-Hewitt, the executive assistant to the CEO of Super Group, took on the challenge of raising R250 000 for Hearts of Hope.

Sinton-Hewitt has helped organise an annual blanket drive to collect over 1 000 blankets to the Alexandra community, however, this year she decided to take on a new challenge.

Much to Sinton-Hewitt’s delight, the final amount received far exceeded their expectations. “Super Group, joined by our customers, suppliers and our business units and employees, have raised in excess of R400 000 for Hearts of Hope Children’s home. We feel very passionately about this wonderful initiative which I think is quite evident by the amount that has been so generously donated.”

Sinton-Hewitt added that she is ecstatic with the final amount they have been able to hand over and looks forward to returning to the home to see the project once it has been completed. Aside from the financial donation, staff members also collected a large number of household items such as toilet paper, laundry detergent and toothpaste.

Deborah van Dongen, the founder and CEO of Hearts of Hope said that they were absolutely amazed by the donation. She said that during tough economic times it is difficult to raise funds. As the donation far exceeded their expectations, the money will be used to build an extra classroom, equip it with furniture and games for the children and create a fence around a portion of the garden where the younger children can play.

Van Dongen has been volunteer assisting children’s homes since 1997 and in 2008 the first child was welcomed to Hearts of Hope. Aside from running the home, Van Dongen also assists with an outreach programme in the Drakensberg.

There is much excitement from the children who live at the home who are looking forward to having a brand new classroom.
