Bryanston High School breaks ground on new hockey field

BRYANSTON – The new Astroturf will be completed at the beginning of next year.

Learners and teachers at Bryanston High School were excited to break ground on their new Astroturf project.

The hockey field at the school will receive a much-needed upgrade and the new Astroturf field will be ready in February next year. Hockey players joined their coaches on the Pat Deacon hockey field to break ground on the new project.

John Skelton, the principal of the school, said the upgrading of the hockey field would fulfil the goal of Deacon’s. Deacon taught at the school for 38 years and was passionate about hockey. She spent much of her time trying to convince former principals of the school that the hockey field should be upgraded to Astroturf.

Skelton said it had taken the school a long time to be able to upgrade the hockey field but he was happy that Deacon’s wish would be achieved.

Deacon passed away in 2010 and requested that her ashes be buried under the hockey field because of her love for the school and the game. Her ashes will be returned to the field when the work had been completed.

“I think she would be really happy to see the project becoming a reality,” said Skelton.

He said since he became principal of the school he’d been thinking about upgrading the hockey field and finally decided that now was the right time to get started on the project.

Once the field has been completed, Skelton hopes that hockey will become a highlight at the school and will encourage more learners to participate in the game.
