Sandton police start a soup kitchen to assist homeless people in the community

SANDTON – The Sandton Police Station will be dishing out soup every Friday at 10am.

The Sandton Police Station has started a soup kitchen to help those who are in need in the Sandton community.

The police station launched the soup kitchen on 5 July to assist displaced people who live around the Sandton area.

Captain Granville Meyer, the spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station, explained that there are many displaced and needy people on the streets of Sandton and the soup kitchen will allow them to help those who are hungry. “It gives the police the opportunity to show the homeless and needy that SAPS care.”

Meyer, who came up with the idea, explained that this is the first time the station has hosted a soup kitchen. He said that he was inspired by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation speech in June. During his speech, the president said,

“Our determination that within the next decade that no person in South Africa will go hungry is fundamental to our effort to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality.”

Meyer said that this inspired him to do what he can to help ensure that no one in the community goes hungry.
