Rotary Sandton has a blast at their fun day

PARKMORE – People with intellectual disabilities participate in a fun sports day in Parkmore.

A good time was had by all at the Rotary fun day, which took place on 18 May at the Field and Study Park, Parkmore.

The annual fun day was filled with excitement and smiles for children and adults with intellectual disabilities from across the provinces.

Rotary is an organisation of business and professional people united worldwide to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

The Rotarians, as they are known, have used their combination of talents to organise an inclusive, unified sports day with Special Olympics South Africa Interactors of the event, which are the junior arm of Rotary. The Special Olympics South Africa provides year-round training and competition opportunities to children and adults with intellectual disabilities

Learners from Crawford College Lonehill, Roedean and Redhill were there to participate in the activities and serve their community.

Participants arrived early and were welcomed with muffins and hot chocolate, before being put through an aerobics warm-up session. The individuals with different abilities, along with their new friends from the Interact clubs, then took part in athletics, volleyball, soccer and other activities, before going head to head against each other at the tug of war.

Refreshments and boerewors rolls were made possible through the generous support of Makro Riversands, Forest Farm, Kia Motors Sandton, Spar Broadacres, and many more. Over lunch, everyone was entertained by a magician who had the crowd laughing.

This was followed by the highlight for many when the engines of the Steelwings club rolled their Harley Davidsons into the event. Everyone had an opportunity to have an exciting ride on the back of one of these powerful machines before the day was concluded with a small gift from the sponsors for all.

Val Thompson, president of the Rotary Club of Sandton, said, “As always, the fun day is so rewarding for me and reminds me of the significant impact that one can have in the lives of others. I encourage the Sandton community to reach out and find out how they can become engaged with the club and future activities.”
