Two suspects arrested following a shootout in Woodmead

WOODMEAD – The Johannesburg Flying Squad apprehended two suspects who had hijacked a truck.

Two suspects were arrested by the Johannesburg Flying Squad following a shootout in Woodmead on 21 April.

According to Sergeant Desmond Subramoney, the communication officer for the Johannesburg Flying Squad, a truck carrying a mixed load of textiles was reported as hijacked near the M1 highway.

Members of the Flying Squad received information that that truck was travelling on the M1 and then later on Corlett Drive in Illovo.

Subramoney said, “Johannesburg Flying Squad members reacted to the information received and were on the lookout. Members managed to spot the truck traveling on the R55 Woodmead direction to Kyalami.”

The members noticed that the truck also had an escort vehicle, a Toyota Run X and backup was arranged on the route. However, Subramoney said the suspects spotted members of the Flying Squad following them and tried to ram into their vehicle.

“The truck came to a stop after it collided into the embankment on the side of the main road and suspects started shooting at the members and members returned fire,” he added.

One suspect, who was driving the vehicle, was arrested when he tried to flee from the truck while the driver of the escort vehicle was also arrested. After further investigation it was discovered that one of the suspects was convicted for armed robbery and was released on parole last year.

Subramoney added that all the doors of the truck were locked and there had been no tampering of the storage compartments. Members of the Flying Squad discovered a signal jamming device connected to a car battery inside the truck.

The scene was processed and all the necessary role players were contacted. The suspects were detained at the Sandton Police Station while the vehicles were taken to the Aeroton Police Pound for safeguarding and further investigation.

Subramoney concluded that all the stock of textiles was found in the truck along with the jamming device, gloves and cell phones.

Details: Sandton Police Station 011 722 4200.
