Lycée Jules Verne hosts art exhibition in Morningside

MORNINGSIDE – The exhibition will be hosted until 13 April at the Morningside Shopping Centre.

Lycée Jules Verne is hosting its third annual art exhibition at the Morningside Shopping Centre with an ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ theme.

The book Around the World in 80 Days was written by French author Jules Verne and the French school was named after him. Perrine Lemazurier-Bossin, the communication manager for the school, explained that the art exhibition was inspired by this novel while also paying tribute to the multiculturalism of the school and its learners.

Lemazurier-Bossin explained that each grade had space to demonstrate the art they have been working on this year with each grade focusing on different themes and art forms. The younger learners from grades 000 to 0 have more time to work on their art and as such have many works to display.

“We have 72 nationalities at the school, so a lot of the children get to show off their different cultures. One of our values at the school is to push for multiculturalism.”

The school hosted an exhibition opening on 2 April much to the delight of parents and learners who visited the mall. The mall was packed with visitors while the Consulate General of France in Johannesburg Doña Pérez opened the exhibition.

The artworks represented countries and cultures from around the world, each in a different art form ranging from paintings, sculptures and collages. Many of the works included recycled items and Lemazurier-Bossin said that there is a focus on encouraging the learners to be eco-friendly. “We are very focused on being an eco-school and for much of our art there are household items used.”

She highlighted that the exhibition is a good opportunity for learners to show off their art while also showing the wider Sandton community some of the work that they do.
