Hirsch’s celebrates World Pancake Day

HYDE PARK – Celebrating #pancakeday at Hirsch's in Hyde Park.

In celebration of World Pancake Day, Hirsch’s invited the Sandton Chronicle and Rosebank Killarney Gazette team for some pancake treats on 5 March at Hyde Park.

What Is World Pancake Day?

World Pancake Day is known as Shrove Tuesday, it doesn’t have an exact date because it’s determined by when Easter falls. It always precedes Ash Wednesday; the first day of Lent.

Lent is the period between Shrove Tuesday and Easter Sunday. It ends on Holy Saturday, usually 40 days before Easter. This year, Easter Sunday falls on 21 April Traditionally, pancakes were eaten on this day to use up rich, indulgent foods like eggs and milk before the fasting season of Lent began.

But although it is enshrined in a Christian tradition, it is believed that Pancake Day might originate in a pagan holiday, when eating warm, round pancakes, symbolising the sun, was a way of celebrating the arrival of spring.
