Hyde Park High School learners create vegetable garden project

HYDE PARK – Learners have created their own sustainable garden at their school.

Hyde Park High School’s Grade 9 geography department is piloting a project to educate and develop learners’ skills in subsistence cultivation as part of the subject’s curriculum.

They will utilise basic resources and gaining knowledge in plant-for-food growth. This practical exercise has seen the recent planting of an assortment of over 100 vegetable seedlings.

The learners have been totally involved in actively planting the seedlings and preparing the soil. They helped each other to make a mini greenhouse for their seeds to germinate in and then transplanted their seedlings. There is great excitement and anticipation among the learners to have the opportunity to harvest their crop in the weeks and months to come.
