Bryanston High School coach found guilty by school for sexual harassment

BRYANSTON – The 33-year-old man was arrested and has been fired from his position following the outcome of a disciplinary panel.

A sports coach from Bryanston High School has been found guilty of sexual harassment by a disciplinary panel and has been fired from his position.

The Gauteng Department of Education and South African Police Services were advised of the allegations and an internal investigation was launched.

In a statement released by the student governing body chairman Aidan Hillebrand, he said, “In the matter of sexual harassment by a staff member at Bryanston High School, the disciplinary panel of three presiding officers has found the coach guilty on all counts covering sexual harassment and financial mismanagement.”

As a result, the staff member was dismissed with immediate effect.

Hillebrand added that the School Governing Body would like to commend the impacted learners for having the courage and determination to come forward and testify. He also thanked the legal team for their commitment to ensuring that the matter was dealt with as quickly as possible.

The student governing body also urged all school governing bodies to deal with these types of issues expeditiously and with the learners’ best interests in mind. The protection of learners should always take priority over the reputation of any institution.

Captain Granville Meyer, the spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station, confirmed that a sexual offences case was opened at the station and is being investigated by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Investigations Unit (FCS).

Meyer said the 33-year-old man was arrested on 17 January and appeared in the Alexandra Regional Court the same day for this matter. “He was released on bail on 23 January, and the case was postponed until 12 March for further investigation.”
