R150k for breast cancer support group

INANDA – Breast cancer support group benefits from Playing for Pink polo event.

A whopping R150 000 raised from last year’s Playing for Pink Ladies Invitational Polo has been donated to breast cancer support group, Reach for Recovery.

The funds were presented to the charity in the form of a large cheque handover at Inanda Club on 20 February. Representatives from event sponsors Cell C, black and Whirlpool were on hand to discuss their commitment to the event.

“The battle against breast cancer requires courage and resilience,” said Miss SA 2018 Tamaryn Green, who represented Cell C and black. “All women should stand in the fight against breast cancer.”

Lorraine de Graaf, marketing director of Whirlpool, said supporting the project is close to the company’s heart and also close to her own heart because many of her family members have suffered from breast cancer.

Edith Venter from Edith Venter Promotions, the event organisers, then called on the polo manager at Inanda Club, Craig James, to say a few words.

He said that it is lovely to work with the women from Reach for Recovery each year. Furthermore, it was encouraging to him to see how women’s polo is growing along with this annual event.

Lastly, breast cancer survivors and volunteers at Reach for Recovery, Stephané Jacobs and Margaret Onemu discussed the work the charity does. Jacobs is also board chairperson of the support group.

“We have given 317 gifts of hope since Playing for Pink started,” said Jacobs, adding that the prosthesis they provide to breast cancer survivors for little or no cost restores confidence and dignity to those women.

Onemu said, “I have been living with a prosthesis for 15 years. After my operation, I felt like life was gone. Then they fitted me and I was balanced. I was so happy. It gave me a lot of joy.”

She added that while breast cancer had been a burden, if it wasn’t for cancer she would never have met the wonderful women at the charity.
