Upcoming pipe replacement in Bryanston to prevent future bursts

BRYANSTON – The project will take place on Arklow Road, Louw Street and Peter Place.

Joburg Water hosted a public meeting at Bryneven Primary School to inform residents about an upcoming pipe replacement project in Bryanston Ext 11.

The project will be just less than 1km of replacements on Louw Street, Arklow Road and Peter Place. The project is relatively small and should take about four months to complete. However, during two of these months contractors will primarily focus on finding a suitable area to store equipment before work begins and ensuring residents are happy with reinstatements after the work has been completed.

Vincent Earp, the Ward 103 councillor said that as revenue is tight within the city, Joburg Water has undertaken to do smaller pipe replacements over time.

“Maybe in the future, we will see a total pipe replacement in the Arklow Road enclosure but infrastructure in the city is pretty old so they [Joburg Water] need to do it in sections and different communities.

“It will also depend on how many burst pipes you have in a suburb,” Earp added.

He said that the only time the water will need to be shut off is when Joburg Water tie in the old pipes to the new pipes. For the project, the valves will be changed, pipes will be replaced and new meters and fire hydrants will be installed along Arklow Road.

Sijabuliso Tshuma, the project engineer explained that there will be occasional shutdowns for the tie-ins but they would try to do this during the day when residents are not home. About 20 people will be working on the project, however, they will be wearing vests and carry name tags with them so residents are aware of the individuals working on the project.

Jacoline Madiba, the stakeholder relations manager for Joburg Water, explained that throughout the process there would be an emphasis on communication with residents to ensure that they are aware of water shut-offs ahead of time.

Earp commended Joburg Water for their transparency and communication throughout the process.
