Montrose Night Challenge kicks off

SANDTON – The first round of the Montrose Night Challenge was cut short by stormy weather.

The annual Montrose Night Challenge, now in its 16th year, kicked-off on 25 January.

The night series features 44 teams and more than 450 cricket and netball players from schools around Johannesburg.

The first set of matches started with much anticipation and excitement from both players and supporters.

Grayston Preparatory School cricket team started off the day against Rivonia Primary School.

However, rain and bad weather put a halt to the second innings of the matches with a few of the netball games also rained out.

Gwen Nelson, Night Challenge secretary said after a great start to the day’s festivities the opening night was cut short by rain.

“Unfortunately, we were not able to go on for the second innings of any of the cricket games. These games will all be completed on 31 January after which the scores will be released.”

She added that they are unable to do catch up games for the netball and the teams that did not play shared the points.

Jono Leaf-Wright, organiser of the challenge said it was a wonderful celebration of school sport before the rain came down.

“All 450 players from 19 different schools were ready for the opening ceremony when the rain started and stopped any further action from taking place,” he said.

He added that there would be six weeks of fun and friendship that lay ahead.
