No rest for emergency services

SANDTON – Nana Radebe, spokesperson for the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spoke about EMS achievements the past year.

The City of Joburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) has achieved a lot during the 2018 financial year.

Nana Radebe, the spokesperson for Emergency Management Services said in March this year the Cosmo City Fire Station was finally opened and ready to deliver medical and fire services to the community promptly.

She said the newly built Cosmo City Fire Station building design paints similarities of fire stations in upmarket areas such as Lonehill and Sandton. “The construction of the fire station includes a BeSafe centre that will serve as an educational tool used by the public education, information and delations team to inform community members about EMS safety programmes.”

Radebe said the Cosmo City Fire Station is equipped with a swimming pool and gym to elevate firefighters’ physical fitness. “The organisation’s primary responsibility is to ensure we save lives and property hence the plan to build the Cosmo City Fire Station is critical.”

During the year, Radebe said the City of Joburg has embarked on a fleet replacement plan to deal with the ageing red fleet that Emergency Management Services is currently operating. “This year the City has bought four new fire engines and a tender has been advertised to purchase more fire engines.”

Some of the highlight this year include that 76 firefighters/EMTs were employed by the City and placed at 29 fire stations within the city.

Radebe also spoke about the three firefighters that ran the 42km Old Mutual Soweto Marathon with fire bunker gear in honour of the firefighters that died at the Bank Lisbon building fire.

“During the festive season, EMS will continue with Learn To Swim programmes to teach school children how to swim in public pools based at the city’s different regions.

“The community is urged to stay alive till we arrive and for any emergencies, call EMS on 10177/011 375 5911 or 112.”
