Sportainment is alive in Sandton
SANDOWN – Sportspeople have a blast every day at South Africa's oldest action sports arena.
South Africa’s oldest action sports arena is still kicking after 28 years.
Action cricket, netball, hockey, soccer and bubble soccer are played week in and week out at the Sandton Action Sports Arena in Sandown.
Young and old, beginners and advanced players keep the courts busy every single day as they stay fit playing the sports they love.
Arena owner Jono Leaf-Wright said besides renovations to the facilities over the years, what has maintained the arena’s popularity is the fun family environment that it offers. “Because we are indoors we can play right through the year, unaffected by weather.
“This while the venue is safe and clean. We call it ‘sportainment’ because it is a blend of sport and entertainment, with DJs, the bar and restaurant and other activities.”
Leaf-Wright explained that the foosball and pool tables are popular, as are the restaurant’s slush puppies and soft-serve ice cream.
“Soon we will also have a virtual darts board, which players can use to play against people overseas.”
On the action sports side of things, children’s coaching, local leagues, the Superleague between arenas, and inter-provincial tournaments keep players busy throughout the year. Beginners, too, have their own divisions in the leagues and work their way up the rankings over time.
Leaf-Wright encouraged anyone interested to give action sports a try.
“It’s a nice way to stay fit and have fun with your friends, and enjoy a pizza and drink with them afterwards.”
