SA Breweries and Metro police promote #SafeDrinking

SANDTON – Motorists on William Nicol Drive recently went through a roadblock with a difference.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department together with South African Breweries and AB InBev recently held a roadblock to hand out breathalysers.

This was to mark the organisation’s annual Global Be(er) Responsible Day (GBRD) which is a global beer industry-wide initiative which brings people together to raise awareness about the importance of making smart drinking choices.

SAB and AB InBev employees took the streets on 14 September, in partnership with Metro police and handed out flyers and disposable breathalysers to motorists on William Nicol Drive in Bryanston and Maxwell Drive in Midrand as a means of increasing awareness around responsible drinking behaviour.

Ricardo Tadeu, zone president of SA Breweries and AB InBev Africa said, “An increase in awareness of problem drinking has been shown to lead to a change in behaviour in terms of drinking and driving.”

Tadeu and Metro police’s Chief Superintendent Angie Mokasi addressed employees, rallying them to take the #smartdrinking pledge, which includes a commitment to have non-alcoholic beers on offer at their next party; never to drive after drinking and encouraging friends to do the same; and to be an ambassador of the smart drinking goals and beliefs in and outside of work.

Tadeu said that people should pace themselves by alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, which allows for a lower intake of alcohol over longer periods as the body is given time to break down alcohol at a steady rate.

“The practice of pacing allows for safer and smarter drinking options,” Tadeu ended.
