Gautrain strike comes to an end after two weeks

SANDTON – The United National Transport Union agreed to an 8 per cent increase.

The Gautrain strike has come to an end following a two-week dispute between members of the United National Transport Union and the Bombela Operating Company, which runs the Gautrain.

The wage strike which led to reduced operating capacity by the Gautrain came to an end when the union and Bombela agreed on an eight per cent wage increase. Early on the morning of 13 August, MEC for Transport Ismail Vadi said that he was optimistic that the strike would soon end.

The MEC said he has been briefed by the parties on extensive negotiations held between the Bombela Operating Company and the union over the weekend and the striking workers would be consulted on the proposed agreement.

“It was a very difficult and robust negotiation process, but Untu is satisfied that this agreement is in the best interest of each member to adhere to their demands and bring an end to the first-ever two weeks Gautrain Strike,” said Steve Harris, the general secretary of the union.

The union had originally demanded a 10 per cent salary increase‚ a housing allowance of R1 600‚ a transport allowance of R800‚ night shift to be increased by 10 per cent and a R20 000 incentive bonus for all employees. However, they have since revised this to a 9 per cent increase as well as a provision for a housing allowance, a travel allowance and a R15 000 incentive bonus.

Along with the 8 per cent salary increase workers have also agreed to a R5 000 incentive bonus and a housing allowance of R900, up from R750. The incentive bonus will be paid in December this year and a second performance bonus, depending on the performance of Gautrain, will be paid in September next year.

The incentive bonuses were one of the main points of contention according to Harris because management would not release financial statements in accordance with the Labour Relations Act.

Gautrain has been slowly extending services offered during the strike and said that it would be fully operational again by 15 August, with extended services being offered from 14 August.
