Three learners from Bryanston High School participated in the annual Eskom Expo for Young Scientists and achieved fantastic results.
Each year students have the opportunity to display science projects they’ve worked on throughout the year. The expo took place at the end of July at Wits University and hosted learners from around South Africa.
The learners displayed their projects and the best projects were then selected to participate at an international level. The three learners who participated from Bryanston High were Afroz Minhas, Kavya Kaushik and Hritik Mitha.
Megan Lester, a science teacher at Bryanston High said, “It is a great opportunity for students to work on a scientific topic, not necessarily part of the school curriculum or try to develop a solution for a problem they feel passionate about. Students who participated in the expo benefited by broadening their scientific knowledge and increasing their understanding of the scientific method.”
Afroz displayed a project titled Performance of a Simple Direct Current Motor where she tried to optimise the functioning of a motor by testing different rotor coil shapes.
Kavya displayed a project titled An Experiment to Test How Boat Hull Shapes Influences Buoyancy. She constructed different shaped boat hulls and tested their buoyancy. She then compared her test results to calculations of buoyancy to see whether her predictions were correct.
“Hritik’s project was titled Increasing the Efficiency of Solar Panels by Glazing was very ambitious. Hritik built a double-glazed solar panel with water in between the panels and tested whether lowering the temperature of the panel will increase the voltage of the solar panels and overall output energy.”
Lester added that Afroz and Kavya were awarded bronze medals for their projects and Hritik was awarded the prize for the ‘best up-and-coming senior’ at a district level and a silver medal at the regional competition.
“These projects take a great amount of time and dedication to produce and we are extremely proud of our Bryanston scientists,” concluded Lester.
