Sandton-born inspirational speaker talks about the environment at a Ted Talk

A Sandton-born inspirational speaker took her passion for the environment abroad when she spoke at a Ted Talk in Oman.

Nicole Smart was one of 10 international speakers invited to share her story. The theme for the talk was the age of amazement, and Smart shared her personal story and views on how citizens can make marginal changes within our homes that can help the preservation of resources and energy and therefore, contribute to a greener society.

“For me, it was a highlight to actually prepare my talk, and essentially be one of the audience. My talk was centred on the sustainable conservation of our environment, and how we can make small adaptations to the way we use our resources within our homes, to make incredible long-term differences to our society and planet.”

Smart said the topic is important for her as many people feel the need to make a difference and feel guilty when they are not able to do so. However, she emphasised that small actions can result in change. “If everybody made marginal changes within their homes to preserve energy, together the collective volume will, without question, make a monumental difference.”

She added that the response had been fantastic and many people weren’t aware how to make small changes in their lifestyles which could result in a greater impact on the environment.

Smart moved to Oman in 2011 and has played an instrumental role in training and developing Omani nationals and expatriates towards the sustainable development of the private sector as well as soft skills development.
