Redhill School supports clothing drive to help various charities

MORNINGSIDE – All the clothes collected during the drive were donated to Vintage with Love which sells the clothes and donates the funds to literacy projects.

The Redhill School community rallied together to support a clothing drive which will support a variety of causes close to their hearts.

All the clothes collected from the clothing drive were donated to a non-profit organisation, Vintage with Love, which sells a variety of previously loved clothing which is still in great condition and all the proceeds from the sales are given to a variety of charities.

All the items donated were sold at the pop-up store in Bryanston on 1,2 and 3 June and over R1 million was raised. This year the beneficiaries include the Link Literacy project, which provides literacy and numeracy lessons for children from low-income schools and Realema Teacher Internship Programme which provides internships and bursary’s for prospective teachers.

The clothes that were not suitable for the Vintage with Love charity sale were donated to two charities which Redhill supports – Diakonia Childcare and Support Centre and Tshebedisanong Primary School.

Siphiwe Vilakazi, the director of community engagement for Redhill, said this was the first year that the school has assisted with a clothing drive for Vintage with Love and they had been overwhelmed by the response from the Redhill community.

Vilakazi explained that volunteers from Community Hours, an organisation which helps young volunteers search for and book volunteer work, and learners from the school had worked together to sort through all the clothing for the sale.

It was also Community Hours which had informed Redhill about Vintage with Love.

“It was important for us to get involved as Redhill School supports literacy programmes and teacher training. One of the Vintage with Love beneficiaries is Realema, an organisation that focuses on teacher training and development.

“The clothing drive exceeded our expectation. Fifteen black bags full of clothes were donated to Vintage with Love for the charity sale. Another 14 black bags full of clothes which could not be used for the charity sale were donated to our two charities, Diakonia Childcare and Support Centre and Tshebedisanong Primary School.”
