Curro Castle Rivonia celebrates grandparents for a day

Grandparents and children enjoyed a fun morning baking and decorating cupcakes, threading bracelets, creating art and taking pictures in the photo booth.

Curro Castle Rivonia hosted its annual Grandparents Day to celebrate the special role grandparents play.

The young learners excitedly welcomed their grandparents with the songs they have been preparing. The grandparents were welcomed and then divided into groups before being led outside to participate in a wide variety of activities.

Grandparents and children enjoyed a fun morning baking and decorating cupcakes, threading bracelets, creating art and taking pictures in the photo booth.

Following the morning of fun activities, grandparents and learners were treated to a lunch in the school hall.

Mignon Basson, the client liaison officer at the school said that the Grandparents Day at the nursery school, in particular, had been inspired by the head of the school Lizell Erwee’s own special relationship with her grandparents.

“Since our school places an emphasis on community and family, we wanted to set aside time for grandparents specifically. We have two special days for grandparents, this Grandparent’s Day, as well as a day where grandparents come to read to the little ones.”

Basson added that this tradition will continue because the knowledge, experience and values passed down by elders is priceless and the more time learners have to spend with their grandparents, the more opportunities there are for growth.

She added that the children talk about the day weeks before it happens and reminisce about it long after making it an exciting tradition to keep up.

“The feedback we get from the grandparents is always very positive. They enjoy the fact that they can engage in activities with their grandchildren and spend some proper, quality time with them at school. It also gives them great peace of mind to see the environment their grandchildren are in each day and to meet and interact with the teachers who work with them.”
