Sandton police hold campaign for Child Protection Week

SANDTON – The campaign aims to raise awareness about child abuse and the rights of children.

The Sandton Police Station hosted a clothesline campaign outside the station in honour of Child Protection Week.

The campaign, held on 30 May, featured a display of T-shirts painted by children describing their experiences and passersby were encouraged to sign a pledge to always protect the rights of children.

Child Protection Week is celebrated from 27 May to 3 June and aims to raise awareness about the rights of children. The theme for this year is, Let us protect all children to move South Africa forward.

The purpose of Child Protection Week is to educate, document, and raise the community’s awareness of the extent of the problem.

Captain Granville Meyer, the spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station said, “This is our annual programme for child protection week to demonstrate what young children go through.”

Meyer has worked on many campaigns relating to Child Protection Week and Women’s Day and said it was important to create awareness about the rights of children.

Throughout the morning dozens of people stopped to sign the pledge against child abuse. Meyer added that they would be taking the clothesline campaign to shopping centres in the area to create more awareness.
