Intern teacher shares experience of student-teacher exchange in USA

SANDTON – Ade Avela Nanti, a final-year Thandulwazi intern teacher, shares her experience during the programme.

An intern teacher at St Stithians College who was selected to take part in an international student-teacher exchange in California has shared some of her experiences during the programme.

The Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy founded by the St Stithians Foundation runs four programmes. One of these programmes is an intern-teacher training programme that provides teaching students on-the-job experience working alongside fulltime teachers at St Stithians College.

The academy was started in 2005 in order to offer students and teacher-development training in maths and science through its Saturday School

Ade Avela Nanti, a final year Thandulwazi intern teacher, was selected for this programme and during her exchange, she has been required to conduct action-based research on a topic of her choice and interest.

She will report back to the Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy and at the Axis Education Summit in July this year.

Speaking about her experience Nanti said, “My visit to San Francisco has given me a different way to look at education. From my observations and active involvement in class, I have learnt that interdisciplinary learning provides learners with ample opportunities to face their reality as well as realistically use the acquired skills from the different array of school subjects without isolating one from another, which, in a sense, is how the real world operates.”

Organised by Teach with Africa in partnership with the Global Teachers Institute, Nanti had to apply for the exchange programme in 2017 and submit a video about an unusual teaching project that she had initiated. Teach with Africa generously covers the full costs of this exchange.

Details: St Stithians College 011 577 6000.
