Saints security systems lead to arrest

LYME PARK – The footage was linked back to the suspect's scanned driver's licence and vehicle registration.

A 32-year-old suspect was arrested after data from security systems at St Stithians College helped the Randburg police track him down.

On 2 May, a learner had his laptop stolen from inside the school’s hostel in Lyme Park.

The St Stithians College rector, Tim Nuttall confirmed the incident and said, “A person, who came onto the property in a vehicle, underwent security protocols that include the scanning of both their vehicle licence disc and driver’s licence at the campus gates. The person then entered one of the boarding houses where he stole a laptop from an empty room. The vehicle left the campus via the same gate.”

Randburg Police Station spokesperson, Captain Makgowanyana Maja said, “Allegedly, the learner left his room with windows and doors closed to go and watch a movie.

“When he came back later, he realised that his laptop was missing. Access is said to have been gained through the door which was not locked.”

After boarding house staff were alerted to the incident, campus security was informed and from footage gained from the cameras located at the boarding house and the entrance gate, images were gained of the suspect in question.

The footage was linked back to the suspect’s scanned driver’s licence and vehicle registration. The theft was then reported to the Randburg police and all evidence supplied to them.

This security process resulted in the police being able to track the suspect who was later apprehended. Maja added, “On 11 May, a team of detectives traced the suspect to the Olivenhoutbosch area where he was arrested.”

Nuttall said, “Security on site is of the utmost importance to St Stithians. With this in mind, boarders have access cards to gain entry into the boarding houses and every student has a safe, lockable cupboard and lockable trunk in their room to ensure the safety of their valuables.”

The suspect appeared in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 14 May.
