Argentinian and South Africa polo teams to compete against each other

INANDA – The Argentinian polo team will compete against South Africa at the Inanda High Goal Invitational.

One of the highest ranked polo teams in Argentina will take part in the Inanda High Goal Invitational against some of the best local players.

The invitational will be held at the prestigious Inanda Club in Sandton on 12 May.

Benjamin Araya, a polo player for the Argentinian side said, “I’m really looking forward to going back to South Africa again. It’s incredible after so many years how this friendship with SA polo keeps growing year after year.”

Ernesto Juan Lalor, Araya’s teammate, echoed his thoughts. “Polo as an international sport has brought together many players from different countries, each with different dynamics to the game,” he said.

“My family, the Lalor family played in South Africa for the first time in the 1950s. It’s an honour to come and experience South Africa.”

While polo in South Africa may have an elitist image, in Argentina it is a popular sport, with big matches attracting crowds of more than 30 000 people and are broadcast live on television.

The horses for the Argentinian team will be provided by the Inanda Club. These are mostly thoroughbred horses known for their endurance, speed and grace. Each player brings eight to 10 horses to the field per game, so there are anywhere from 70 to 84 horses present at any high-goal match, not including the four umpire horses.

The event will also be attended by the Ambassador of Argentina Javier Figueroa who will be on hand to welcome guests and to officiate on the day.

“The Embassy of Argentina has the honour to present and welcome you to this day and hope you thoroughly enjoy the Argentinean culture displayed at this fabulous tournament,” said Figueroa.

The day will also feature musicians, the Rodolfo Mederos Trio and there will also be a variety of traditional Argentinian cuisine.

The gates will open at 10.30am on the day with the match between the Argentinian team and a South African selection will begin at 3pm. Tickets are available at www.ticketpros.co.za
