The Johannesburg Roads Agency recently carried out complete re-cabling of various intersections in the greater Sandton and Rosebank area during the current financial year.
The intersections that were re-cabled are part of the new ‘no joints’ cable policy launched by Mayor Herman Mashaba for the most critical high-volume intersections intended to reduce the high number of electrical faults over time.
The intention is to progressively reduce traffic-signal downtime caused by old, damaged and joined cables that are susceptible to rain, lightning and electrical surges.
This is to ensure that traffic-signal equipment is continuously upgraded to prevent a situation where maintenance faults become uncontrollably high impacting traffic mobility.
This takes place at key intersections in the city as the joints cause the robots to go faulty more often. According to Bertha Peters-Scheepers, operations manager: marketing and communications for the roads agency, there are a lot of factors that can change the estimated completion time.
Scheepers said factors such as wayleaves, excavations, and reinstatement can impact completion time. “Depending on the various stages there are between six to eight people working at an intersection.”
During the downtime, Scheepers said road signage is used to warn motorists, and JRA will issue a list of all intersections to the Metro police for allocation of points people at main intersections.
The list of completed intersections for Sandton:
- Bowling Avenue, Katherine Street and South Road
- Ballyclare Drive and St Audley Road
- Grayston Drive and Eleventh Street
- Rivonia Road and Eton Road
- Katherine Street, Bowling Avenue and Dartfield Road
- Woodmead Drive, Main Road (R55) and Dytchley Road
For Rosebank:
- Eleventh Avenue and Fifth Street
- Eleventh Avenue and Central Street
- Central Street and Seventeenth Avenue
- Club Street, Eighth Street and Kloof Street
- Grant Avenue and Algernon Road
- Third Street and Second Avenue
- Eleventh Avenue, Ivy Road and Third Street
- Eleventh Avenue and the M1 North off-ramp
- First Avenue and Third Street
- Henley Road, Twickenham Avenue and Artillery Road
- High Street, Bartlett Road and Bellona Road.
