Super Rugby teams use Hyde Park School for practice sessions

HYDE PARK – A few touring Super Rugby rugby teams have used Hyde Park High School as their training ground ahead of their matches.

With the Super Rugby season in full swing, some travelling teams have used Hyde Park High School for pre-match training sessions.

The school was selected by the Sharks, Sunwolves and Hurricanes for their pre-match training sessions and Hyde Park was thrilled to host both local and international teams.

The Sharks were at the school for two sessions on 16 and 17 February before their match against the Lions and the school’s first team rugby players were able to observe the Sharks in action as they went through their practice drills.

The New Zealand side, the Hurricanes graced the school’s fields from 19 to 24 February while the Japan team, the Sunwolves had one session on 17 March before their nailbiting match against the Lions.

Hyde Park is well known for accommodating touring teams and also played host to the France rugby team for three sessions when they prepared to take on the Springboks last year.

Manolis Vogiatzis, principal of the school commented that it was a wonderful acknowledgement of the standard of the school’s facilities and said he was looking forward to hosting many more teams in the future.

The school’s first team rugby fullback, Tshego Jones said he had been a firm supporter of the Sharks since the age of eight. “This was a huge moment in my life to be surrounded by my favourite rugby team,” he said.

“I hope that I can bring the Sharks team spirit and structure into the Hyde Park High first rugby team this coming season.”
