Redhill School launches state-of-the-art AstroTurf

MORNINGSIDE – Redhill School hosted a tournament and an exhibition match with the South Africa men's hockey team to celebrate the launch of its new AstroTurf.

Redhill School launched its much-anticipated AstroTurf hockey pitch with a round-robin tournament and an exhibition match by the South Africa national men’s hockey team.

According to Galete Kirsch, Redhill School’s operations manager, the school tendered the project out in 2016, broke ground in October of the same year, and the final stages of construction were completed in December last year. The astro is flanked by a modern pavilion that will offer hockey fans a comfortable spot from which to catch all the action.

Until recently, the school’s hockey teams had made use of the AstroTurf at the nearby Morningside Country Club. “When the opportunity presented itself, to build our very own AstroTurf on campus, we didn’t hesitate,” said Joseph Gerassi, the school’s executive head, who added, “Our facilities, cultural or sporting, are outstanding, and so we will be very proud to add and boast such a superb AstroTurf.”

The South Africa national hockey team will also be utilising the facility as a training base. “The national team will not only train at our facility, but they will also be hosting several hockey clinics for the school’s hockey teams, to help them develop their skills and maximise their potential,” said Keith Armstrong, the school’s campus deputy for co-curricular activities.

“This will be a clear advantage, and especially so for those who have set their sights on either regional or national team selection further down the line.”

Gerassi added, “This is a tremendous scoop for us, and we look forward to hosting the experience and prowess of the national hockey team on our AstroTurf. I have no doubt that our players will benefit immensely from participating in the clinics and will become highly accomplished players at a school level and beyond.”

David Joshua, Redhill’s head of hockey added that the school had placed an emphasis on hockey development and growth. “It is a privilege to work alongside amazing coaches, who all have a wealth of knowledge and experience, as well as a passion for the game,” he said.

“Our students are in good hands and they’re excited for the road ahead.”
