Sandton Police educate Sandown High School on the dangers of drugs

SANDTON – The Sandton police recently paid a visit to Sandown High School to warn the youngsters about the dangers of drug trafficking.

Sandton police recently paid a visit to Sandown High School to discuss the dangers of drug trafficking as part of the station’s awareness campaigns.

Captain Granville Meyer and Sergeant Cynthia Segoa held the talk at the school to raise awareness with this year’s matric class.

Meyer said there are various methods used by drug smugglers to try and transport drugs across the border.

Captain Granville Meyer, spokesperson for Sandton Police Station talks about drug smuggling.

The programme was attended by more than 80 matrics and Meyer explained the dangers of ‘mules’ who often swallow the contraband in latex packets.

“Young South African women, in particular, are easy pickings for international drug traffickers looking for ‘mules’ to carry drugs around the world,” said Meyer.

He said international drug smugglers lure or coerce women into being drug mules for them. “In many cases, the naïve and unsuspecting women carrying the drugs are only decoys for the real mules, who are also on the same flight.

“More than 3 000 South Africans are jailed in foreign prisons for drug offenses.”
