The Maddd Festival took over Redhill School for a few hours while children and teachers enjoyed all the arts some of the schoolchildren have to offer.
The festival, which stands for music, art, dance, design and drama encouraged learners to get involved and perform any medium they are passionate about.
Tia van Loggerenberg, a Grade 12 learner and head of the Arts and Culture Committee, took charge of the festival and was involved in every aspect of its planning.
Van Loggerenberg said that many learners don’t see all the effort that goes into the performances and wanted to encourage all learners to get involved, even if they didn’t have prior experience. “Even students who doodle in their notebooks are artists so we really wanted everyone to get involved in Maddd.”
She was in charge of holding the auditions and over 50 students auditioned. She added that while the Maddd Day couldn’t feature every learner who auditioned, there would be another assembly for them to perform at so that every learner would have the opportunity to showcase their talent.
Matthew Counihan, the director of Visual and Performing at the school, said that he hopes the festival can integrate art into the school day, rather than having it as just an extramural activity.
“Tia and her arts and culture committee have put so much work into this. She’s had to be the director and the producer and her team has learned to deal with all these different things so we really wanted them to get involved in all aspects,” said Counihan.
Learners gathered during a school assembly and had the chance to watch a variety of performances including classical instrument performances, contemporary and hip-hop dancing, the school’s rock band as well as a performance by some of the teachers, which was a great hit with the learners.

“I’ve been loving the performances; for a lot of these kids they don’t have the opportunity to perform so for them it’s amazing for their friends and teachers to see them up there, it’s just beautiful.”
Van Loggerenberg added that it had been amazing to see the festival come together so seamlessly after hours of long work.
