Ernest Ullmann Parkrun gains popularity during 6 months of its existence

GALLO MANOR – The Ernest Ullmann Parkrun is growing in popularity but needs more volunteers to ensure its smooth operation.

About 450 people run through the tranquil Ernest Ullmann Park in Gallo Manor every Saturday during the Ernest Ullmann parkrun, which has grown in popularity since its inception in August last year.

Run director Alex Barbosa said the run has brought together people of all fitness levels and ages from the local community to bond and enjoy nature together. “Everyone loves the environment. It’s such a beautiful park with a river and lovely birdlife, trees, shade and a friendly atmosphere,” said Barbosa.

She said the introduction of the parkrun was an initiative by Friends of Sandspruit, who are endeavouring to maintain the natural beauty of the park while improving the security and encouraging local residents to frequent the area.

Reflecting on her six months as run director, Barbosa said, “It has been a fantastic journey meeting so many new people. Comrades runners and some famous people have even come along. The volunteers have each brought something unique to the team.”

The course is described as fairly easy with a low angle uphill toward the end. The record holder for the run is Admire Muzobambwa who completed the course in a time of 0:17:9 in September last year.

Barbosa said the parkrun is in need of more volunteers to marshal, scan and time the run every alternative week. Volunteers will be required to arrive at 7.15am and stay until 9.30am every alterative Saturday. Barbosa estimates that approximately eight more volunteers are needed.

People in the Gallo Manor, Morningside and Wendywood areas are welcome to join the run, which starts at 8am in Minto Road every Saturday.
