The Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ Court ruled on 30 January that Orange Farm firefighter Lesetja Kgaffe, who shot and killed his station commander Lesedi Mphatswe in 2015, will spend the next 12 years in jail.
The City of Johannesburg has heard that an argument ensued between the two when the station commander delivered disciplinary process documents at the Kgaffe’s house.
Public Safety MMC Michael Sun said the incident sparked controversy in the City and affected morale amongst colleagues. “The department now needs to focus on service delivery to the residents, especially emergency services.
“At the same time, we must never overlook the well-being of our firefighters and paramedics as they are always in the forefront of danger when saving lives.”
Robert Mulaudzi, Emergency Management Services‘ (EMS) spokesperson, said they hope that this latest development will help Mphatswe’s family find closure and will also help staff members to heal.
“It is uncertain that at this stage whether the convicted firefighter will appeal the judgment. The City will respect all the legal process and rights if the matter does proceed further.”
