Weekly roundup of city news: What have you missed?

JOBURG – Find out what has been happening in the City of Johannesburg.

The past week some employees of the City of Johannesburg were arrested and residents were again reminded that water restrictions were still in place. Let’s take a look at what you might have missed.

At the beginning of the week, the City reminded residents that level one water restrictions were still in place. Residents are only allowed to water gardens between 6pm and 6am and may not use a hosepipe carrying municipal water to clean paved areas and driveways.

The City’s assistant director for stakeholder management in the revenue department was arrested on 22 January, along with two members of the public, for allegedly attempting to solicit a R2 500 bribe from a Selby resident.

The mayor, Herman Mashaba, said the City official had allegedly provided information about accounts that were in arrears to his accomplices. They would then go to the addresses and try to solicit bribes from the residents, he alleged.

Mashaba said by the end of November last year 18 people were arrested in connection with fraud and corruption allegations. Some of the suspects worked in the revenue department, and others were members of the public.

On Friday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) arrested three Metro police officers in connection with the murder of journalist Godknows Nare in April last year.

The suspects were detained at the Metro police headquarters in Martindale, after allegations by Ipid that they covered up the murder. The City said they were aware of the arrests and that an internal investigation had already been completed. However, the results of the investigation were not made public. Spokesperson Luyanda Longwe said this is because the matter is sub judice. The outcome will be made public once the court informs the department to do so, she said.
