Back to school time should be fun and safe for children

JOBURG – Dettol plans to make the school year exciting for children and parents.

Children are susceptible to a number of health issues. Some are serious and some are manageable.

This is due to a number of reasons ranging from weak immune systems, bad hygiene practices and even birth defects or genetic problems.

In South Africa, one of the leading avoidable and treatable causes of child death is diarrhoea. Many of these diarrheal disease-associated infections and deaths are preventable by simple hygiene practices

Dettol, a leader in germ protection and a trusted champion of health, reaches over a million schoolchildren through hygiene education programmes every year.

“Dettol has long been at the forefront of the war against poor hygiene in schools. Dettol’s initiatives have been highly successful and its programmes are fun, engaging and interactive. We have a vision of a world where all children go to school and all schools provide a safe, healthy, comfortable environment where children can grow, learn and thrive,” said Jorge Güil, director of marketing at Reckitt Benckiser.

To ease the challenge of paying school fees, Dettol has since partnered with Shoprite to give away R1 million in school fees between January and February this year.

With the Western Cape experiencing a severe drought, Dettol is also involved in the Shoprite Smart Water Meter Challenge. The supermarket chain extended its water-saving initiatives to include a smart meter roll-out programme which will save millions of litres of water a day at schools across Cape Town. Dettol is sponsoring the installation and maintenance of smart water meters at 50 schools across the province.
