Bryanston Sports Club merges cricket and lawn bowls

BRYANSTON – Bowls has a new face at Bryanston Sports Club.

What do you get when you cross lawn bowls with the shortest form of cricket?

You get B20 bowls, of course. The fun but challenging game is cheeky and addictive, and has gained momentum at the Bryanston Sports Club over the holidays. So much so that even during the week now, bowlers (and batsmen) can be found playing on the lawns almost all times of the day.

“B20 bowls was invented by Bowls South Africa to attract the younger generation to the sport of bowls,” explained Bryanston’s bowls chairperson, Ian McKenzie.

He said various B20 leagues were being played around the country, and Bryanston would start its own league in the next month or two.

The game is generally played with two teams of three players each, but can be played between individuals and even groups of eight or more.

Players will bowl one end, aiming for a flat mat with circles designating how many runs can be scored – one, two, four or six runs.

When both teams have scored their runs, they swop ends and bowl at wickets, in an effort to deduct runs from the other team.

“B20 has been successful because it is more fun and dynamic than normal bowls.”

McKenzie encouraged any persons or companies interested in entering a team into Bryanston’s upcoming B20 league, to contact the club’s Anthony Mayston.
