Skelton reflects on a year of achievement at Bryanston High

BRYANSTON – Principal of Bryanston High School John Skelton discusses the successes and challenges of the past year with the Sandton Chronicle.

Bryanston High School principal John Skelton shared the many successes of the community government school in the heart of Bryanston over the last year with Sandton Chronicle.

Skelton said Bryanston High School celebrates placing third in the A league for athletics this year, which is a phenomenal achievement for coaches and athletes. He also highlighted that the girls’ cheerleading squad ranked first nationally at this year’s Cheerleading National Championships as well as the incredible achievement of the rugby boys, who won the Clover Rugby Series.

“On the academic front, the Achievers Club have produced excellent results this year, turning B’s into A’s and taking academic results to greater heights,” said Skelton.

He also highlighted the major upgrade to the school gardens this year, adding much beauty to the school grounds.

In 2018, the school celebrates its 50th anniversary, with a number of major celebrations planned throughout the year. Bryanston High will also host the 2018 KZN Rugby Festival, taking place in April.

The school also participates in regular podcasts on important educational matters, which are available through the EduThink podcast for download on iTunes or CastBox.

Since safety is a priority at the school, two developments are underway to tighten security including the conversion of a storeroom into a place of safekeeping for school children’s bags and the upgrade of the perimeter fence.

Bryanston High donates regularly to local charities and, in 2017, was fortunate enough to donate 200 boxes to the Santa Shoebox Project as well as supporting four animal shelters and hosting a number of blood drives at the school.

One of the ongoing challenges faced by the school is the inability to accommodate all the admissions received each year since Bryanston High is seen as a school of choice in the area. Skelton said they received over 800 applications for Grade 8 this year alone.

“Bryanston High School is a community government school and we would like to serve the community in any way possible, but we would also like to request that the community support us in maintaining the high standards of the school,” concluded Skelton.
