Joburg Water: Update on Sandton main line repairs and landfill excavation

SANDTON – Following the major burst pipe last week, two more leaks have been discovered on the same line.

Following the massive burst pipe in Linbro Park last week that left residents without water for about four days, two more leaks have been detected.

MMC for environment and infrastructure services, Nico de Jager, released a statement dispelling rumours that the pipe is caving in.

“Following last week’s major burst on the main water pipeline that runs through Linbro Park landfill site, two more leaks were discovered on the same line, about 50m apart.

“I would like to state clearly that contrary to reports, the pipe is not caving in. These are separate leaks and are attributed to erosion caused by the landfill.”

De Jager said in the statement that Johannesburg Water will fix these leaks once all the reservoirs on the Sandton line are filled to capacity. “Then the entity will aim to do repairs within 24 hours, or for as long as there is water in the reservoirs, to avoid residents being affected.

“Johannesburg Water is working with Pikitup to excavate and remove the landfill. This work is currently in progress.

“We initially aimed to conduct this work in mid-December, when water demand is less, but if we wait until then we will lose too much water.”

De Jager said he will provide regular updates to residents via the media and his Twitter account.

“I ask for residents’ patience as we steadily conduct these repairs, but also tend to all other necessary maintenance requirements.

“The decades-long neglect of maintenance means there is still a huge mountain to climb to effectively address our city’s ageing infrastructure challenges.

“However, this administration is committed to addressing the City’s challenges to the benefit of all our residents.”
