St Stithians Boys’ College come out tops at Tour de Maths competition

SANDTON – St Stithians Boys' College triumphed in the 2017 Tour de Maths competition against 26 top Johannesburg schools.

St Stithians Boys’ College and Girls’ College were congratulated for placing first and second respectively in the 2017 Tour de Maths competition.

St Stithians came out tops following calculations after the final leg of the year-long competition which concluded in October.

Marc Ancillotti, head of maths at St Stithians Girls’ College said, “This is the first time in the history of the competition that we have taken the top two places, overall, as a college. In total, 26 of the top schools in Johannesburg participated in seven legs of the competition which saw 831 students take part in what is, essentially, a Grade 10 competition.”

In the individual component of the competition, the Boys’ College achieved first, second and third place, with the Girls’ College taking up the next two spaces on the log. Grade 9 Bradley Hultzer took first place, with Willem van Ryswyck, also in Grade 9, occupying the second place spot and Muhammad Moola in Grade 10 achieving third place.

Kundra Oosthuizen (Grade 10) took fourth place while Sindi Pitikoe occupied the fifth place position.

Head of maths at the Boys’ College, Eugene Stolk said, “It has been eight years since the Boys’ College won the competition, and they had to wrestle hard across the whole year to take it back from the Girls’ College who won it last year.

“In a very tight finish, St Stithians Boys’ College pipped St Stithians Girls’ College to win overall by one point, and the Saints teams were 12 and 13 points clear of third-placed school Kingsmead.”

Ancillotti remarked that overall, maths at St Stithians was in good hands and the future looked bright for young mathematicians to retain the titles next year.

The first leg of next year’s competition will be hosted by St Stithians College on 25 January.
