Two youngsters from Redhill School recently flexed their academic muscles at the South African Mathematics Olympiad and were placed in the top 50.
“Two of our students, Anna Buckland and Nico Bell, are placed within the top 50 of the junior and senior national maths Olympiad, respectively. The South African Mathematics Olympiad is the biggest mathematical competition in the country that had approximately 100 000 participants in the 2017 Olympiad,” said Linda Hamman, head of marketing at the school.

The Redhill team wrote their first round in March. The junior division consisted of separate papers for grades 8 and 9 and the senior division of one paper for grades 10 to 12.

Each paper consisted of 20 questions with multiple choice answers and the schoolchildren had one hour to complete the paper. Each school was provided with the solutions.
For this round, the teachers were tasked to mark the papers.
Participants who attained 50 per cent or higher in the first round qualified for the second round which was written in May. The second round required the Grades 8s and 9s to write the same paper which comprised 20 questions to be completed within two hours.

The best 100 senior and junior participants from the second round qualify for the third round. “Congratulations Anna and Nico who qualify for the third round; we are very proud of you both and wish you all the best of luck,” said Hamman.
