Helping parents keep their children safe on the road

WYNBERG – Imperial Road Safety in conjunction with Wheel Well and 94.7 handed over two much-needed car seats to a mother of twins in Wynberg on 27 October as part of their Car Seats for Kids campaign.

Imperial Road Safety in conjunction with Wheel Well and 94.7 handed over two much-needed car seats to a mother of twins in Wynberg on 27 October as part of their Car Seats for Kids campaign.

The campaign, which was launched at the beginning of October for National Transport Month sought to educate and assist parents with small children about the necessity of buckling up children, under three years old, in car seats.

Group commercial executive at Imperial, Berenice Francis shared the shocking statistic that less than seven per cent of children travelling in cars are buckled in.

Imperial advertised the campaign on 94.7, inviting parents to donate their old unused car seats to people in need. One of the many people to call in was Dorcus Silowa, who is a mother of one-year-old twins.

Silowa lives in Soweto and her work contract in Wynberg ended at the end of October. Her husband works as a truck driver. She was unable to afford the car seats and told the Sandton Chronicle about her struggle to safely transport her children.

“If my mom wasn’t around, I would buckle in my boy in the front passenger seat and sit with my girl on my lap as I drove the car. The donation of these car seats means my kids will now be safe wherever we go and we can go out to more places. I am so happy and thankful,” said Silowa.

Wheel Well is an NPO focused on children and road safety, which operates from an office in Randburg and receives and refurbishes donated car seats to give to those in need.

Wheel Well founder, Peggie Mars said her dream is to get every child in every car into a car seat. “The only requirement to get a seat from us is to have a kid and a car,” said Mars.

Imperial has assisted over 8 000 children, over six years, with car seats and they hope to continue educating parents about the importance of these seats in the future.

While the campaign has ended, Wheel Well continues to welcome any seat donations at their office in Randburg.
