Sandton police arrest one hijacking suspect

WOODMEAD – Sandton police are pleased about the arrest of one suspect after a carjacking that took place on 26 October.

Sandton police are pleased about the arrest of one suspect after a carjacking that took place on 26 October in Woodmead Drive.

Sandton police spokesperson Captain Molefe Mogodi said the victim was allegedly on his way to deliver goods and driving a company vehicle along Woodmead Drive, near Waterfall Crescent, when two suspects, one of whom was armed, approached his car.

“One pulled out a firearm, threatened him and forced his way into the car. He [the victim] was then ordered to sit in between them. They drove away followed by other suspects until they found themselves entering a private property where a resident witnessed the scene,” said Mogodi.

The behaviour of the suspects prompted the witness to approach them. When the suspects realised they had been noticed, they sped off, with the witness following them alongside police and security members. Mogodi said the suspects eventually abandoned the hijacked car and disappeared into a nearby veld.

Mogodi said one suspect was arrested and detained at the Sandton Police Station and will appear in court soon. “Police are looking for the remaining suspects and are hoping to make arrests soon.”

“We would like to thank our police members, Savika and Duma Tactical K9 Security companies for taking part in arresting the suspect. A special ‘thank you’ is directed to the man who first raised the alarm. We would not have known about the crime if it was not for him,” added Mogodi.

Station commander for Sandton police Brigadier Egen Moodley praised those involved and also encouraged community members to continue assisting the police with crime information.
