All in the water for St Stithians Girls College water polo team

The St Stithians Girls College water polo team has taken its ninth gold medal from the last 12 tournaments played. A silver medal and two fourth-place finishes complete the tally.

The latest silverware comes from winning the Reddam House Girls’ U19 Water Polo Tournament in Cape Town, at the end of September, making Saints the first Gauteng side to do so.

They have also won the Old Mutual Roedean U19 Tournament twice, the U18 Saints Invitational, the Clarendon U19 Tournament, The Reef Cup, Summer Splash and the National Aquatics Tournament twice.

All members of this ‘dream team’, have represented their province in various age groups, not only for water polo but also for hockey, squash and swimming.

This year, Bianca Prinsloo played water polo for the SA women’s team at the EU Nations Cup in Prague, the Czech Republic, while Leila Fernandes and Kate Hinrichs played in SA’s U17 team.

Una-Kelly Donnelly and Cassidy Hanna were selected to play for the SA U17B side, and Leila Fernandes the SA U17A side, at the Confederation Africaine de Natation Amateur tournament in Zimbabwe.

Coached by SA men’s water polo captain, Pierre le Roux, the team has converted possible silver medals into gold ones this season, maintaining the number one position in school girls’ water polo for 2016 and 2017.

“Over the past two and a half years, he has built a confident team of youngsters who love this sport and an equally formidable group of parent supporters who travel the country supporting their daughters from the side of the pool in their blue and white Saints Supporters’ kit,” said the girls’ college deputy head, Karen Prinsloo.
