Redhill School staged RedFest, an annual celebration of the arts, during Heritage Weekend in September and Morningside came alive with fun in the sun, theatrical wonder and culinary delights for all who visited.
RedFest is an annual event where world-class performers, Jozi’s finest food trucks, vendors of various activities for children and celebrity patrons all come together to celebrate the arts in style, and RedFest 2017 was no exception.
Initiated in 2016, RedFest is a three-day wonderland of gourmet food and wholesome fare – from designer burgers to homemade ice cream – copious activities for kids and a choc-a-bloc programme of some of the best theatre available on the circuit. Household names like Germandt Geldenhuys (Binnelanders), Kate Normington (Sister Act, Mama Mia High School Musical) and James Cairns (Dirt, Three Little Pigs) were all involved in a myriad of productions staged over a period of three days.
Redfest is the showcase component of the Redhill Innovate initiative. Always forward-thinking and widely known for its dynamic approach to education, Redhill School has developed the initiative as a route towards instilling creativity and skilled tenacity in its students.
One of Redhills’ old girls, Lesedi Job, also directed the dynamic Gina Schmuckler in the now-renowned play Helen of Troyville and, for this former Idols contestant and theatrical presence par excellence, this year’s RedFest was a homecoming triumph.
Commencing with a red tie gala opening on the Saturday evening, the festival typically runs for the following two days.
“This year saw novel inclusions like the secret sunset session from Suco (Sunshine Collective), a unique conscious silent disco workout combining meditation, breathwork, yoga, dance and cardio for an all-in-one workout experience. Spurred on by this year’s patrons, the productions both from within Redhill School as well as those of professional outfits rolled on unabated all weekend, and this year’s patrons programme carried some heavyweight names in South African entertainment,” said Linda Hamman, head of marketing for Redhill.
