As the world becomes more environmentally conscious, organisations are under increased pressure to show how they are contributing to a cleaner and safer space for their communities and employees.
Since September is recycling month, it is the perfect time to set up a programme to separate recyclables and reduce the company’s impact on the environment. This has the benefit of creating opportunities for team-building while enhancing the company’s image to customers and suppliers.
Communications manager for Mpact Recycling, Donna Noble said, “It is important to ensure everyone at the office knows how the recycling project works. Regular communication updates on the topic will keep recycling top of mind and employees interested in the programme.”
Noble shared a few tips on how to recycle in the office:
- Form a green team to drive your recycling initiative by identifying green champions in your office
- Give the project a name to encourage buy-in from everyone and make it easily identifiable
- Conduct a waste audit at the office to identify how much recyclable waste is produced and what percentage is paper, plastic, glass, cans and so on
- Recognise priorities for your business and come up with an appropriate recycling strategy
- Place bins in convenient locations like shared workspaces and close to printers and photocopiers
- Host green meetings and events to generate excitement around the programme
- Celebrate success and reward those who contribute to drives
- Review the programme regularly and make necessary adjustments
- Expand the programme to incorporate other green initiatives like cleaning up local parks or incorporating the community.
