#ICYMI: Kids plant seeds of the future

RIVONIA - Curro Rivonia recently celebrated Arbor Week by planting indigenous trees and celebrating the relationship between trees and people.

To celebrate National Arbor Week, schoolchildren from Curro Rivonia planted three indigenous trees on the new campus along a fence adjacent to Rietfontein Road.

Khaya Zitha, a Curro Rivonia parent, who is senior horticulturist at Johannesburg City Parks, addressed the Grade 4 to 7 children on the need to protect indigenous trees. These trees are an integral part of our natural heritage. The schoolchildren were informed of the scourge of exotic trees in our country and the measures taken to eradicate these as well as other alien invasive plants.

The tree-planting ceremony will become an annual event on the school calendar in the future.

Below is the tree pledge given to the children by Zitha:

I hereby promise to take care of you and not hurt you. I will never remove you or break your branches. I will at all times protect you from those who want to hurt you. I will do this because you are so special to all of us, you provide oxygen to everyone unselfishly, you provide shade from the summer sun and you make our environment look beautiful, healthy and green. You provide a home for the beautiful birds and other animals and I will always tell others about your role in our lives. You will always remain a true friend, I will harm you not.
