Illegal dumping frustration

SANDTON – Illegal dumping is a major issue on Ballyclare Drive with several large piles of rubble.

Illegal dumping of building rubble on Ballyclare Drive in Sandton has residents up in arms. A concerned resident, Peri Zourides witnessed one offender dumping blatantly during the day.

Zourides said the incident occurred on 16 August but there have been numerous other incidents. He added that it was a big problem and something needed to be done to stop the illegal dumping.

Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for the Metro police said, “[Metro police] issues fines of up to R1 500 for dumping.”

He added that many offenders have been fined for dumping at various locations, including Ballyclare Drive.

“Residents must please send their photos [of offenders] especially of the number plate to deputy director Zed Mangaliso on WhatsApp or SMS 082 779 1361.”

Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp said, “The illegal dumping taking place along Ballyclare Drive has become endemic. “It has been and is constantly reported to David Mahlangu and Brian Ranking at Pikitup.”

He added that it was believed the illegal dumpers worked for contractors in and around the Bryanston area.

“Ballyclare is a hotspot, whenever Pikitup clears the rubble, dumping re-occurs within a day or two. Residents are encouraged to report any illegal dumping when it occurs by contacting [the Metro police] so that the culprits can be caught.”

Earp said the dumpers wanted to save money by not taking the rubble to a City of Joburg dump site.

“The residents want to place bollards along the road to prevent vehicle access,” he added. “This, however, will have financial implications.

“The residents and I are sick and tired of the illegal dumpers operating with impunity. Together we need to remove and prosecute those who are dumping in our public open spaces.”

Mahlangu of Pikitup said he was looking at ways of finding a solution.
