Better roads to alleviate congestion

SANDTON – Big inroads are being made to improve roads and sidewalks in the Sandton Central area.

Sandton Central Management District is making inroads in improving roads and sidewalks for all commuters across a variety of transport options in the Sandton Central area.

Sandton Central Management District city improvement district manager for Cushman and Wakefield Excellerate, Elaine Jack, said the work currently conducted by the City of Joburg is soon to be completed, alleviating a considerable amount of traffic congestion.

Jack said the roads are new and improved, and added that public transport and infrastructure will go a long way to support a safe and comfortable experience for those travelling to Sandton Central.

Member of the mayoral committee for Transport in the City of Johannesburg, Nonhlanhla Helen Makhuba said, “We are very pleased the project is coming to completion, which will make them accessible to all road users. Good quality roads and sidewalks contribute to making our City an attractive investment destination and assist in meeting our mandate to grow the Johannesburg economy.”

Key pedestrian routes have been upgraded by improving surfaces and adding street lights and landscaping.

Upgrades have already taken place in Grayston Drive, Katherine Street, Rivonia Road, West Street, Friedman Drive and 5th Avenue, with the soon-to-be-completed Grayston Bridge.

Over 1.3km of dedicated cycling lanes have been created around Sandton Central and between Sandton and Alexandra to provide a safe route for cyclists and encourage more people to cycle.

From this month, there will be a dedicated public transport loop for all public transport vehicles around Sandton Central running along Rivonia Road, Friedman and 5th Avenue. This will make things easier for commuters using public transport.

Kelvin residents play a role in beautifying their area

From October, Rea Vaya BRT will travel between Sandton Central, Alexandra and the Inner City on a trunk route. Services will begin at 5am and run until 10pm, with higher frequency at peak times.

Introducing public transport in Sandton and Alexandra is intended to reduce traffic and encourage commuters to use public transport instead of private vehicles. The widening of the Zandspruit Bridge and Katherine Street to the M1 highway Marlboro Drive on/off-ramp has already improved traffic mobility between Sandton Central and the M1 Marlboro Drive on/off-ramp at this popular access point to Sandton Central.
