Police release Sandton crime statistics

SANDTON - Police have rreleased the crime statistics for the year April 2015 to March 2016.

Sandton’s crime statistics for April 2015 to March 2016 were recently presented to members of the public, ward councillors and members of the Sandton Community Policing Forum at the Johannesburg Country Club in Woodmead.
The statistics were broken down into six categories, namely contact crimes, contact-related crimes, property-related crimes, other serious crimes, crime detected as a result of police action and subcategories of aggravated robberies.

Newly appointed Sandton cluster commander, Major General NN Sithole said he was impressed with the high rate of prosecution, but that there is still a lot to be accomplished in the area, specifically hijackings and violent assault. “We have seen a decrease in property-related crime as well as contact crimes, such as attempted murder and assault, but car theft and violent robberies remain a problem for Sandton,” said Sithole.
Headline statistics for Sandton April 2015 to March 2016:

  • Murder: 12 cases were reported, up from eight the previous year
  •  Common robbery: Common robbery is up from 188 cases to 190 cases this year
  • Burglary at residential premises: Burglary cases are up from 714 to 758
  •  Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs: Drunk driving arrests rose from 579 cases to 656 cases
